Letterlopes
1Once upon a week in 2006 I thought of perhaps my very best invention yet… The Letterlope! It’s basically a letter but written on the envelope it is posted in… At the time I thought it might change the world… I had stars in my eyes… I honestly thought a world of glory awaited… I was very wrong.
I decided to write one letterlope a day for one week and post them to my good friends at Macklin Street in Derby. I put a good few minutes into making each one something quite special as they were to probably go down in the history books as the pioneers of their kind… The very first of the letterlope era. What I did not foresee was that they would never indeed see the light of day, they would never be carefully unfolded and wishful eyes would never indeed glance upon their wonder. Yes, they did indeed arrive at the house untainted by the postal service and yes they did reach the hand of the inquisitive resident… but never were they opened. Instead they were stored away as a treat for a day that never arrived and still they remain in the shadows.
But alas… I have discovered the original scans I made of each of these wonderful creations and have uploaded them for the world to see in all of their fantastic glory… Relish at their magic… Bask in their wonder.
There are even a few references to Luniere short film projects in there.
Make Your Own Music Box Melodies
1I’ve recently been digging through some old things and venturing into a world of translucent memories… Not long after finding my ‘Mechanical Music Box Set‘ for which you can ‘Make Your Own Music Box Melodies!’ I stumbled across a myriad of memories in the form of hand made melodies… A myriad. Whilst working as a temp for two years, you find yourself with lots of time… time when you should be working… temporarily… for two years. Well anyway… When I first took the music box set into work it went down a storm with friends. You can be certain that any temping job will be bloated with artists, musicians, writers etc and this one was no different. Everyone made several melodies.
Here are just a handful of the melodies we made before the music box was banned for making too much music.
My melody:

Music Box Concept Render
0Well… This is another old one… A low-res render test with some improved modeling and texturing… It’s a bit sketchy… The rear base of the model is floating and the music cylinder moves around far too much. It’s mainly just to get a feel for the character within an environment. It will hopefully throw up some ideas visually as well as musically. The kinds of sounds the character can produce might be dependent on the way he moves or vice-versa.
The music is a very short section from a larger sequence of chord ideas from Biff. It’s not yet supposed to be coming from the music box… it’s more of a development of ideas.
Music Box Character Motion Tests
0It was a while ago that I created these tests… They were primarily to examine the amount of character achieveable from different structural designs of the music boxes. I think my conclusion was that they all had a uniquely interesting character, some quite funny, some quite sad. The music is also from an early point in the development process… Biff made several chord sequences and melodies from the videos I gave him and this one seems to fit nicely with this compilation of clips.
An Old Conversation
0I have just been sorting out my hard-drives… Moving gigs here moving gigs there. As I was sifting through some files in the Twinkle Box project folder I stumbled upon a document called discussion.doc… The contents of which made me smile:
Howdy Biff,
Beal spoke to me today and said you had a job for another week and then another decision at the end. bummers…
Well… today I have been collecting images with the digital eye in my dads shed for the curious creatures music box experiment…
I have a production plan in mind for it which will help us actually initiate a movement… it’s simple and can be written in two sentences but I would prefer we discussed it over a pot of yorkshire brewed from four bags.
I have all manner of rusty metal instruments on my desk from my rummage in the shed: An axe head, a meat cleaver, some door hinges, nuts & bolts, screws etc. Exotic surfaces with a textured landscape skin of time… That sounds fit x
It’s funny because I still haven’t finished this project and the document dates back 3 years. I’ve just been looking through some of the design work and test videos and they’re great. It seems to have been so long since starting several projects that have all developed into something much more than they were originally intended to be. I feel like I’m on a continual disjointed learning curve.
I’m not sure why I saved the document.
I can remember that day in the shed.
