Watch The Fool Looks At The Finger That Points To The Sky
0The Fool is a short film/music promo I wrote, animated and directed in 2006. It was made with no budget or deadline so it took quite a while to make but I was a failing freelancer at the time with a lot of time to spare.
It was such a fun film to make and has been screened at many film festivals as well as featured in some great publications including Specialten and 3DWorld.
Synopsis:
As snow falls on a sleeping world, one window remains glowing through the darkness, where a clumsy wooden puppet sits alone as a story unfolds before his eyes. Lured in by the beautifully crafted pieces of an enchanted theatre he is taken on a whirlwind ride over which he has no control.
Set to the music of The Little Explorer, this short brings to mind old zoetrope animation, experiments captured on cine film, and worlds where forgotten toys have souls.
Watch Loetzinn
1Loetzinn is a short film I wrote, animated and directed along with Chris Gooch in 2004. It was made as part of a DV Shorts scheme with the production company EM Media in Nottingham.
We got hardly any money for the project but I remember having a lot of fun making it. It’s been screened at loads of great places including Annecy and Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Synopsis:
A bleak wind howls across the night, it is cold and hostile. In the distance a silhouetted city skyline rises out of the water into the dark sky, holding up the night like pillars.Lost and helpless on the surface of the abyss, two tin boats emerge from the surrounding mist.
With tatty edges and rust filled scars, Pop-Pop and Mac draw closer. The tension rises as they are alerted to the other’s presence. The fight for survival is about to commence.
Characters and Cogs
1When you have no deadlne it’s easy to get a bit obsessed with minute details that make no difference. This image is from a while ago when I started learning about cogs and gears. The characters are designs for the twinkle box project. With pretty much no bearing on any final outcome I was trying to design a cog system to allow the main music cylinder to rotate at different speeds to the wheels that drive it and the character along. The idea is that the music tempo can change regardless of the speed of the character so as not to be too constrained by his design. There’s no real point to this because the cog system that I was working on is hidden within the outer shell of his body and I guess functional realism isn’t really of great importance when dealing with fictional mechanical beings that live in a world of music. Nevetheless… I make a cup of tea, sit down with a calculator and begin scribbling cogs and random numbers. Perhaps I need to disect some mechanical clocks.

Luniere Films Available for Download
0Loetzinn and The Fool… New videos uploaded… I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve uploaded Loetzinn as a downloadable video since completing it in 2004. I’m actually making a new website for it… Nothing complicated, just a few pictures and bits of information. I’ve been receiving a lot of emails about showing it recently so I thought it would be nice to have it available for anyone to download and show as desired. Whilst I was in the flow I also re-compressed ‘The Fool’… The website currently has around 10 different sizes and formats for every occasion, which now seems like such a waste of time and is probably more confusing than useful so I’m probably going to take those particular versions off the web and replace them with the one below. Feel free to copy the files and share them with whomever you please.
Alternatively you can watch these films online now. Check out the Projects section.

These files have been removed due to lack of server space and lack of funds to increase the space… Oh well… If you would like a quicktime of any of the films here drop me an email and I’ll sort it out.
You can find out more about each of the above films in the ‘Films‘ section of this website.
